Christmas, it got me thinking. Why do we only send cards once a year, maybe twice, for birthdays? I sent two non family Christmas cards last year, these two people have been a constant network of friendship to me and I wanted to make them smile.
When I was my daughters age (she’s 12) I wrote to my gran often, and loved getting a reply and would check the post daily for a response. Then we were offered the chance to have a pen pal though school from another country. My penpal was in Japan, her best friend wrote to mine and the four of us used to get so excited receiving letters, photos and gifts (some of which I still have 30 years later) It’s a shame we all lost contact.
Receiving something in the post, apart from bills… Who ignores the everyday letters and bank statements? My husband hates opening his post. He has a very negative approach to it and assumes they contain negative news, which in turn fuels his depression and anxiety.
Now with social media everyone knows what you had for breakfast. But what about our grandparents, great aunties and uncles, do they check their socials every hour? some don’t even have social media. What about people who suffer with their mental health and have come off social media, how do we communicate with them, a quick text?
I used to have Pink Bond writing paper and write with an ink pen, I loved sitting there and thinking of what I had been up-to, and share these journeys/memories with others.
How about we go back to basics? Think of someone that you haven’t spoken to for a while and put pen to paper. How about encouraging our children to write to their best friend or grandparent and post it through their letter box.
I think we could all do with a little boost right now.
